Day 5 - Last day in Reykjavik and Departure

  DAY 5 - August 30, 2023  


Today, after breakfast, we checked out of the room. We stored the duffle bags at the hotel and went for a walk in the city to occupy our time till noon. We had to be at the bus stop at noon for pickup and driving back to the airport.

  

We walked around at a park nearby. They had some neat sculptures and flower gardens.



We also visited a cemetery and walked through it.


This was the wall outside the Harpa concert hall. We had stood on this wall and taken a picture when we all visited in 2019.

After strolling around the city, we headed back to catch the bus back to the airport.

Once we reached the airport and checked in our duffle bags, we went looking for a place to eat some lunch. We decided to eat at Elda restaurant in the food court.

 

I ordered an acai bowl, and Neel got a sandwich, fries and soup.


The soup was very expensive, and Neel thought we need to have quite a good number of refills to feel it was worth the money!


He did many refills, till he and I were stuffed with soup! 


We were cracking many jokes on how shocked the restaurant owners were going to be to see the soup volume so low so fast!


We did a salute to the 'soup war' we conducted! Misson successful!


Sadly, it was time for us to part ways, Neel to London and I to Newark! We spent 5 days together and it was a wonderful mom-son time. I was so grateful Neel joined me on this trek. He was immensely helpful to me and a wonderful support. He kept our spirits up with always being cheerful and being a good sport to amble along slowly with his mom, when he could have walked much faster! I will cherish the time we spent together, while enjoying the most amazing and diverse scenery.

Day 2 - Hiking from Landmannalaugar to Lake Alftavatn - 15 miles (24 km)

DAY 2 - August 27, 2023 Today was going to be a very long day. This day, we hike from Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker and from there to Lake Alftavatn. The elevation gain is highest on the first day of the hike. Before covid (2020 and prior years), Day 1 of the hike used to be from Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker and stay at the hut there for the night. Day 2, the hike would be from Hrafntinnusker to Lake Alftavatn. Pre-covid, there were also many companies offering this trek as a 4 day trek. Post covid, there were just 1-2 companies offering this trek and they made this into a 3 day trek, combining day 1 and 2 into a very long day and distance (24 km/15 miles). The guide made breakfast for us - very yummy oats - we had it with Icelandic yogurt. There was also fruits, nuts etc. Then, he had all of us pack our sandwiches and some trail mix to snack ( we all brought lunch boxes with us, to minimize wastage). Day 4 - Hiking from Emstrur to Thorsmork - 15 km (9.5 miles)

 DAY 4 - August 29, 2023   Today was the last day of the trek. As mentioned, the "slow" trekkers, including me (sad !) were asked to leave at 6:30 am, to make the bus on time. We woke up by 5 am, had oats and fruits for breakfast, packed a lunch and headed out. It was a beautiful morning. The guide let me know there were a few uphill and downhills initially and then it was mostly flat till the end. The trail was well-marked and there was no concerns we would go the wrong way or get lost in the highlands. The guide said he and his group would leave around 9 and catch up with us, but they never did. The Emstrur huts, as we left and started walking towards Thorsmork. The sign showing it was 15 km to Thorsmork (ending point) and 39 km to Landmannalaugar (starting point). The three girls from Iowa started out before Neel and I. They were the slowest in the group.
